Located in the Niger Delta Rivers State has a topography of flat plains netted in a marvellous web of rivers and tributaries. Port Harcourt as the capital and administrative seat of rivers state is known as Nigeria’s garden city because of its beautiful layout and topography on the Bonny river, in the Niger delta. The city was founded and established by the British in 1913 and named after Lewis Viscount Harcourt, secretary of state for the colonies.

Port Harcourt continued to grow as local authority until January 1, 1949 when the eastern house of assembly signed an ordinance creating town council. At present, Port Harcourt is a leading port of the country, a road and rail hub and major industrial and exports centre. The city has over 100 industrial concerns including sawmilling, auto assembly, food canning, flour milling, tobacco processing and the manufacture of rubber, glass, metal and paper products, cement, paint, furniture and soap. Besides of being the operational headquarters of the Nigerian petroleum industry, Port Harcourt has natural tourism potential.
